Agrarökonomik zur Jahrhundertwende – Bewährtes und Unorthodoxes AgEcon
Brandes, Wilhelm.
In this farewell lecture some concepts important for (agricultural) economics are discussed. Special emphasis is given to the Invisible Hand of Adam Smith, sunk costs, information economics, path dependency, error tolerance and redundancy. It is proposed that agricultural economists follow closely new developments in economics proper.

Chiridota heheva—the cosmopolitan holothurian ArchiMer
Thomas, Elin A.; Liu, Ruoyu; Amon, Diva; Copley, Jon T.; Glover, Adrian G.; Helyar, Sarah J.; Olu, Karine; Wiklund, Helena; Zhang, Haibin; Sigwart, Julia D..
Chemosynthetic ecosystems have long been acknowledged as key areas of enrichment for deep-sea life, supporting hundreds of endemic species. Echinoderms are among the most common taxa inhabiting the periphery of chemosynthetic environments, and of these, chiridotid holothurians are often the most frequently observed. Yet, published records of chiridotids in these habitats are often noted only as supplemental information to larger ecological studies and several remain taxonomically unverified. This study therefore aimed to collate and review all known records attributed to Chiridota Eschscholtz, 1829, and to conduct the first phylogenetic analysis into the relationship of these chiridotid holothurians across global chemosynthetic habitats. We show that...

Food habits of Oligoryzomys longicaudatus (Rodentia) in a steppe-forest transitional area of Argentinean Patagonia Ecología austral
Polop,Francisco; Sepúlveda,Lorena; Pelliza Sbriller,Alicia; Polop,Jaime; Provensal,M. Cecilia.
We described the spatial and seasonal variation of feeding habits of Oligoryzomys longicaudatus in four environments of the steppe-forest transition zone of Argentinean Patagonia. Composition of fecal pellets collected from live-trap captures was determined with microhistological techniques using an identifcation key of representative plants of our study areas. Fruits and seeds constituted 57.2% of O. longicaudatus diets, followed by foliage (26.8%) and arthropods (16.0%). Fruits and seeds, foliage parts, and arthropods were primarily found in individuáis from shrublands, forests, and peridomestic areas, whereas foliage predominated in pastures. Similarity Index revealed differences between pastures and the other environments. Diet in shrubland showed...

Pandora’s Box: Does Electronic Commerce Increase the Optimal Amount of Fraud? AgEcon
Welling, Michael; Krebs, Alexander; Graefe, Gernot.
Close business relationships are important in the food industry. However, the introduction of electronic commerce has emerged as a fundamental challenge to these relationships. In particular, retailers who start procuring private label food products in electronic auctions risk the termination of the relationships with their suppliers thus losing the value derived from these relationships. Instead, they move their focal interest towards single, unrelated transactions. The authors argue that this development increases the optimal amount of fraud in electronic commerce. In this context, they analyze the occurrence of opportunism.

RACIONALIDADE LIMITADA E OPORTUNISMO NA CADEIA DO CAFÉ: IMPACTOS NAS FORMAS CONTRATUAIS DO CONSÓRCIO AGRÍCOLA DE FAZENDAS ESPECIALIZADAS AgEcon
Ferreira, Gabriel Murad Velloso; Waquil, Paulo Dabdab; Goncalves, Wilson Magela.
The present research aimed to analyze the impact of opportunistic behavior and bounded rationality impacts in the forms of contract adopted by the Agricultural Consortium of Specialized Farms (C.A.F.E.). For that, a case study was accomplished with the objective to embrace the most important characteristics of the theme as well as its process of development. The theoretical reference that gave support to this study it was the Transaction Costs Economics (TCE). Through the analysis of the variables approached by TCE, more specifically the behavioral factors (bounded rationality, opportunism) and forms of contract, it was concluded that, in the case studied the existence of opportunism interferes in certain way in the trust increasing the transactional...

The opportunistic feeding and reproduction strategies of the annual fish Cynopoecilus melanotaenia (Cyprinodontiformes: Rivulidae) inhabiting ephemeral habitats on southern Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Gonçalves,Cristina da Silva; Souza,Ursulla Pereira; Volcan,Matheus Vieira.
Most Rivulidae fishes are popularly known as annual fishes which live in ephemeral environments such as pools, that obligatorily dry out seasonally causing the death of adult individuals. They have unique biological characteristics such as small body size, early sexual maturation, continuous reproduction, an elaborated courtship behavior, and a great reproductive capacity among fishes. The rivulids are widely distributed in North, Central and South America. In this study, the diet and reproductive biology of Cynopoecilus melanotaenia was analyzed. A total of 263 specimens were collected and the analysis of 233 gastrointestinal contents revealed an invertivorous diet composed mainly of small crustaceans (Cladocera, Amphipoda, and Ostracoda) and immature...

Transfer of Institutions: Actors and Constraints - The Russian Case in a Global Context AgEcon
Oleinik, Anton.
Modernity is usually thought as a complex society with clearly differentiated spheres of everyday life. It means, in particular, that economic rules do not interfere with the norms structuring political, social, scientific and other interactions. The complex, differentiated society sharply contrasts with a "small" and homogeneous "pre-modern" society. The process of modernization, i.e. differentiation of the spheres of everyday life, can take various forms. In an advanced country it relies on internal forces. Modernization in this context looks like an evolutionary, "bottom-up" development. In a backward country (Russia and Germany in the first half of the 20th century), modernization requires a strong governmental (from the top to the bottom)...

Understanding and Managing Behavioural Risks -The Case of Food Risks Caused by Malpractice in Poultry Production AgEcon
Hirschauer, Norbert; Zwoll, Stefan.
The probability that actors in economic relationships break rules increases with the profits they thus expect to earn. It decreases with the probability and level of short- and long-term losses resulting from disclosure. It also decreases with the level of social context factors and intrinsic values which shield actors from yielding to economic temptations. This paper assesses the relative merits of various scientific approaches concerned with risks in economic relationships and outlines their contribution to the study of opportunistic rule-breaking. Since the identification of (misdirected) economic incentives faced by firms and individuals represents the starting point for a systematic analysis of opportunism in any field, we also outline a microeconomic...

Zur Ökonomik der Kontrollmaßnahmen bei Lebensmitteln und Futtermitteln AgEcon
Lippert, Christian.
The objective of this article is to describe and to analyse the basic relationships between control frequency, amount of fines, other social sanctions, the producers‘ capability to influence certain attributes (including costs of quality assurance) and damage incidence in the field of food and feedstuffs safety. For this purpose an economic model is developed that minimizes monitoring costs including (a) the harm prevented and (b) the revenues from fines. First, monitoring measures are optimized by exclusively taking account of the interests of consumers and taxpayers. In a second step, the model is enlarged by adding constraints relative to the costs of quality assurance so that aspects of both producer welfare and total social costs are explicitly...
